Mother 'stabbed her twin daughters, 3, to death then set fire to home in horrific murder-suicide attempt'
A mother has been accused of stabbing her three-year-old twin daughters to death then setting fire to their apartment in a 'horrific' attempt to cover the murders up.
Police said the northern California woman has been hospitalised after she also tried to take her own life, but failed.
Firefighters made the gruesome discovery of the murders when they were called to the blazing Fairfield apartment around 10.30pm on Tuesday evening.
There they found the doors and windows locked.
When they broke into the apartment, they discovered the bloodied bodies of the two little girls.
The mother, whose name has not been released, was also found inside the apartment. She appeared to have stabbed herself, but was still alive.
Police were unable to interview her before she was rushed into surgery. She is expected to survive.
Police were still trying to contact the father, who did not appear to have lived with the family in the flat.
Fairfield police lieutenant Darren Moody said it appeared to be a murder-suicide.
'We have no evidence that anyone else was involved,' he told local media. 'The doors and windows were locked from the inside.'
Police chief Walt Tibbet said the scene inside the apartment was 'horrific'.
He compared it to a similar fire in the area several months ago in which four children died.
'Our officers are also fathers and sensitive to see the senseless tragedy involving young kids,' he said.
Neighbours had tried to battle their way into the blazing apartment but had to give up, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The family had only lived in the apartment for a few months. They moved there when the mother relocated for a job.
